The Discoverers—Vikings
Superheroes—Monitor + Maintain nutrition + mental/physical care/strength in the view of Viking Explorers. Pursue purposeful curiosity toward wonderstanding by asking thoughtful questions, listening critically, speaking clearly, precisely + confidently. Accept responsibility + respond with dignity + respect.
Anthropology—Wrap Pre-Columbian and begin European Exploration by studying the Viking explorers and the physical + human features, language, music, art, dance and historical context that made up their culture.
Mathematics—numbers + operations, base ten, beginning fractions in relation to rationing food and time on ships/explorations, building shelters and begin to explore a little geometry with navigation.
Science—Plants as a primary source of matter and energy in most food chains via foragers and explorers. Leveraging tools, maps, process, precision to investigate + experiment both evidence + opinion, + honing our familiarity with simple tools, meaningful questions and careful investigations.
Reading—Exploring elements and structures of narratives and myths, thoughts and motivations through the lenses and tools of metaphor, simile, compare/contrast.
Communicating—Narratives, poems, progressive verb tenses, references all come into play as we explore Viking mythology, poetry and characters. Every unit provides plenty of opportunities to share learning with each other individually, in small groups and large groups.
The Discoverers—Magellan
Superheroes—Monitor + Maintain nutrition + mental/physical care/strength in the view of Early Explorers like Magellan + his peers. Pursue purposeful curiosity toward wonderstanding by asking thoughtful questions, listening critically, speaking clearly, precisely + confidently. Accept responsibility + respond with dignity + respect.
Anthropology—Delve into European Exploration, studying the Magellan and the physical + human features, language, music, art, dance and historical context that made up his surrounding culture(s).
Mathematics—numbers + operations, beginning fractions in relation to rationing food and time on ships/explorations, building shelters and explore a little geometry with navigation.
Science—Explore relationships between producers and consumers as we consider the foods of the sailors and the natives, as well as extending the ideas to trade, both food and material.
Reading—Explore POV, compare/contrast and structure + support thoughts + ideas through the eyes of captain, crew and natives in informational texts, narratives and poems.
Communicating—In honor + celebration + respect of the sacrifices, costs and rewards we reap in connecting far away lands, we will begin our own exploration by passing the torch of the classroom blog around the classroom. Students will take turns crafting a blog post to push live on the classroom blog and include in our weekly newsletter home. Each week will feature a different student. We will also explore conventional order of adjectives, homophones in relevant poetry. Every unit provides plenty of opportunities to share learning with each other individually, in small groups and large groups.

The Discoverers—Today & Tomorrow (<==that's you!)
Superheroes—Monitor + Maintain nutrition + mental/physical care/strength in the view of Modern Explorers like Bohr, Einstein, Curie, Lovelace, Feynman, Sagan, Kaku, Porco, Nye, Cox, Tyson—who's next?! Pursue purposeful curiosity toward wonderstanding by asking thoughtful questions, listening critically, speaking clearly, precisely + confidently. Accept responsibility + respond with dignity + respect.
Anthropology—Delve into Modern + Futuristic Exploration, studying our frontiers today and the physical + human features, language, music, art, dance and historical context that do and *might* make up surrounding culture(s).
Mathematics—numbers + operations, beginning fractions in relation to rationing food and time on ships/explorations, building shelters and explore a little geometry with navigation—no longer just by/beneath the stars, but now *among* them, dimensions unknown. Begin to explore math in relation to physics, the movement of the Universe.
Science—Explore relationships between producers and consumers as we consider the foods of the sailors and the natives, as well as extending the ideas to trade, both food and material. Begin to explore physics (matter + forces).
Reading—Explore POV, compare/contrast and structure + support thoughts + ideas through Sci-Fi and compare/contrast Sci-Fi exploration with historical human exploration.
Communicating—In honor + celebration + respect of the sacrifices, costs and rewards we reap in connecting far away lands, the classroom blog will continue.
